First, I draw one closed shape by repeating a sub-shape in a clockwise rotation. For example, I often repeat a spike as the sub-shape, which results in a star growth with any number of appendages. Many other shapes can arise and appendages can overlap. Once I have the first shape I don't mark inside of it for the rest of the drawing. The second step is to fill in a solid shape centered behind the empty shape. I like to create the illusion that a solid object is obscured by an empty shape. When the background shape is completely filled in, I know that the drawing is finished and I can move on to the next.
